Cruise Coverage: The July 2014 Somernites Cruise – A Fun Weekend In Kentucky

(WORDS AND PHOTOS BY DOUG GREGORY) – The July Somernites cruise was another smashing success. Between the huge numbers of cars and all the people checking them out, this was a fun weekend in Kentucky. Here’s what we mean –

By the numbers:

Over 1,000 cars.

More than 300 Corvettes (the featured car for the July Cruise)

Tons and tons of people.

5 Mavericks in a row.

One side of a parking lot lined with 1st-gen Monte Carlos.

It was warm and humid, but the nasty weather stayed away for the event and saw cruising last late into Saturday night.  One of the best things I like about this event is that so many different cars come each month so that you aren’t gawking as the same stuff all the time.  There was plenty of interesting rides this time to be sure.  There was a well-done rendition of a C-cab sitting atop a Bronco II chassis.  We saw two Diesel IH Scouts.  A pair of Pontiac Can-Am models were there (which you hardly see these days).   A tasteful Ford Courier made me smile.  Likely one of the top 5 most beautiful cars ever designed, a Lincoln Zephyr, was on display as was a rare appearance by a 1940 LaSalle.  There is a make and model for nearly everyone to enjoy and lust after.

Storms came through in the early AM hours on Sunday and before they arrived we devised a plan to get the car into cover in case of hail.  The lightning was impressive, but the hail stayed up near Lexington during our drive home.  All we really ran into was some stiff rain near the Kentucky river as we headed North on Hwy 27.  Taking the back roads is a nice way to see if anything worth building or salvaging is within eyeshot of the two-lane blacktop.  We did see a nice ’68 International, step-side pickup for $3,200 near the Pizza Hut in Stanford.  Seemed solid and the only visible rust was the surface kind on the front bumper.   It might make someone a good project.
