It was an exciting weekend of land speed racing in Wilmington, Ohio just a few days ago as some of the coolest and fastest cars and motorcycles in the country gathered to hammer the throttle with the East Coast Timing Association. Big speed of the weekend belonged to Ransom Holbrook who crested 234mph atop his Hayabusa motorcycle. Big automotive speeds were run by guys like Bob Keselowski (dad of former NASCAR champ Brad) who shoved his C/GCT (C-motor, gas burning, circle track) entry deep into the 200-teens. Other notable runs included Sean Mote in the car we have called the “Coupe D’Kill” plowing his way to a 197mph pass and officially getting us all excited to see that monster of a car run over the two century mark. There were new entrants into the ECTA’s 200mph club, and a lot of new drivers out there having fun setting records or running time only.
In this gallery you’ll see a cross section of the cool things I spotted in the pits during tech inspection day. There were Cadillac engines galore with the one planted in the Buick Regal being the most stout looking NA piece with the giant single plane intake and all. Engines ranged from the interesting to the electronic with one competitor riding an electric sidecar motorcycle that achieved a top speed of 59mph….repeatedly.
In what had to have been the single most breathtaking display of motorcycle riding skill I have ever seen, rider Eddie Powell managed to stay upright and on top of his motorcycle after clipping the timing lights at what looked to be at least 180mph. The bike went into an incredible speed wobble but calling on his decades of experience as a drag racer, land speed racer, flat track racer, and rider on the streets, Powell saved the bike and we plugged in our backup lights. We can get more lights, we can’t get more Eddie’s, so we were happy that he was OK.
