(Photos by Zane McNary) – The SCTA held their final meet of the season at the famed El Mirage dry lake last weekend and as is normally the case, the action was fast and dusty. BangShift’s ace Land Speed photographer Zane McNary was on the scene to catch the coolest stuff both large and small traversing the dry, cracked earth of El Mirage.
It is amazing to us that guys are able to run the speeds that they do on this type of surface. We’ve talked to a bunch of guys who have run there and apparently if you are running an enclosed body car at El Mirage, the dust level in the cabin starts to creep ever higher with the increasing speeds of the vehicle until you are about at the finish line and you are racing both the course and the dust cloud in the car to maintain a sight line out the windshield!
Also, in terms of history, El Mirage is nearly unparalleled in the annals of American racing. It has been used with varying frequency by hot rodders and speed freaks for something like eight decades. It is a living example of gearhead’s ability to adapt and overcome. Is it the best surface in the world? Hell no. Is it a workable surface that hot rodders have access to? Hell yes. That about sums it up!

Zane’s shots are great! It was a very cold couple of days with an excellent 40mph tail wind on Saturday! What a spectacle!
