Land Speed Gallery: WannaGoFast Chicago 2013 — Half Mile Land Speed Action!

(Words and photos by Bob Chiluk) – Our gearhead forefathers probably got it from the generation before them, so the premise of us finding a strip to run wide open is nothing new. After World War Two, the past time of running your junk on abandoned air strips was the perfect place to settle horsepower bragging rights. WannaGoFast.com runs a number of events at airstrips around the country to safely run a heads up half mile run what you brung show. Hult Field is a private airstrip just outside Chicago that provided a back drop for some big horsepower  late model warriors to settle up on thier 1/2 mile heads up shoot out.  When you think of this essence of grass roots events, you don’t usually associate it with the types of cars that show up here. Ferrari, Lambo, BMW, high horse Mercedes, late model Corvettes and and a bunch of GTR’s are the norm. A few muscle cars show up too. A couple of the street driven late models topped 200 MPH! The pocket books may be a little deeper here , but the heart of a grass roots run what ya brung  is the essence of what carries on to the next generation.

The Cormaro belongs to a buddy of mine. It was a multi year project built in his garage with C4 suspension. I’ve been fortunate enough to log a few hours behind the wheel.
