(Photos by Tony Maffini) – The East Coast Timing Association started its 2013 season in grand style with a big meet at its Wilmington, Ohio home. More than 175 racers competed last weekend in a dizzying myriad of classes that ranged from 125cc motorcycles to hairy chested turbocharged muscle cars streaking down the course at more than 200 mph.
As you will see in this gallery, the true beauty of land speed racing is in the incredible creativity and proud individuality of the competitors. Everyone is doing it their own way and the masses approve. You’ll see photos of a Nissan 240 that has half a Ford 351 V8 in it, a 1980s Saab that looks like something you’d skip on a used car lot but actually runs in excess of 160mph on the mile, Hot Rod Magazine’s hilarious Monza which was “supercharged” with five leaf blowers mounted in the trunk and plumbed into the intake, and on and on and on. This is hot rodding at its very finest and we had a blast at the event. When the final results are posted by ECTA, we’ll share them with you. For  now, consider this a huge photo essay from the ECTA’s April meet!

The Honda 305 in the Gallery is sweet!
Didn’t drag racing used to be as much fun as this?
I always wanted to go to Maxton. Now that it has been moved maybe I’ll get to go….
Great cars, nice pix Caveman!
That black ’69 Coupe de Ville rewrites the book on sinister.
Why no pic of the other winner?
