(Photos by Colin Johnson) – Colin Johnson is our man on the street in the greater Las Vegas area. Recently, he attended the Rat City Rukkus car show that is held at the same time as Viva Las Vegas as a bit of a rebuke. The Rukkus is hosted by the Junkyard Pirates Car Club and according to Colin, the Pirates have been doing it about 8 years now.
As he told us, it’s kind of the anti-Viva Las Vegas show and sponsored by local businesses such as Bar 702 and Welder Up. They have a Ms Rukkus contest and this year’s winner was a girl named Delena. Along with that there are bands, and vendors. Colin told us that the rules are looser than Viva and wihle registration is technically pre-72, they have a specialty class where newer vehicles are allowed in.
Colin said, “It’s quite a variety and makes for an interesting show with Bugs next to muscle cars and rat rods next to restos or originals. Despite the loose rules at it’s heat it’s a rockabilly rat rod show, with a strong showing of rat rods and traditional rods. Rat Rod Magazine and other publications are involved too. This year Bo Huff appeared at the show.
