Sinkhole Be Gone: The National Corvette Museum’s Skydome Will Reopen September 3rd!

Sinkhole Be Gone: The National Corvette Museum’s Skydome Will Reopen September 3rd!

A year and a half has gone by since the floor opened up underneath the National Corvette Museum’s Skydome, allowing eight of the Museum’s most prized Corvettes to drop into the karst within moments. Since then, the museum has extracted most of the cars out, from the barely injured 2009 “Blue Devil” ZR-1 prototype vehicle to the absolutely demolished Mallet Hammer, filled the hole and profited from a tourism boom that came about after the sinkhole opened up. While operations could be seen via windows, access to the Skydome section have been closed off as engineers and staff finished work.

All of the effort will pay off in less than a week, when the National Corvette Museum will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony, re-opening the Skydome to the public as part of the 21st Anniversary celebration. The Millionth Corvette, a white 1992 convertible, will be unveiled, fresh from restoration. John Cafaro, executive director of Chevrolet Global Design, and Dave Bolognino, director of fabrication operations for GM Global Design will be on hand to explain the process behind the Blue Devil’s restoration. Exhibits will be on display that explain the circumstances involved in the sinkhole’s creation, the unrestorable Corvettes will be on display in their as-found states, and much more.

The ribbon-cutting event will take place at 8:45 a.m. on September 3rd, 2015. For more information check out CorvetteMuseum.org.

It’s hard to believe how crushed the Mallet Corvette is…go see it along with the restored dome.

I must be missing something. I was just at the museum two weeks ago, in the skydome. The above mentioned car was not there but they have the sinkhole marked out and the other cars on display. Interesting
