Friday Excuse to Go Home Early and Drink: Toyota is the Most American Car Company; Camry More Domestic than F150

DetroitNews.com alerted us to Cars.com’s yearly American Made Index survey of cars that are for sale in the US. This year, the Toyota Camry came in with the top spot and overall Toyota scored higher than all three domestic freaking car companies.

Out of the top 10 Most American cars, only five were from domestic manufacturers. The F-150 had been a five time winner of the survey but was knocked out by the Camry, or as we like to call it, the root of all automotive evil.

Because the Index factors in sales figures, the Camry has always had a decent ranking. For example, the new Ford Taurus has 90 percent of its parts made in the USA, but it is only selling at a clip of 2,000 per month, where the Camry is selling 25,000 examples per month, so the Cars.com ranking skew heavily in the Camry’s favor even though it has less American-made content. Which brings to question the name of the American Made Index.

Chrysler has with absolutely no vehicles appearing in the Top 10, according to the Detroit News story. Apparently the best selling Chrysler model, the mini-van, is constructed 100 percent in Canada.

We could go on, but we’ll let you get the rest of the details here from the Detroit News. If you need us, we’ll be in the back shotgunning beers.
