From the Archive: Vintage Drag Racing Hero Cards

As we delved into our personal archive of neat stuff here at the BangShift.com east coast headquarters we came across two vintage drag racing “hero cards”. When we say “hero card” we’re talking about the handouts that racers have made up with large photos, on card stock, to sign and give to fans. We’ve got one from Tony Nancy in the early 1970s and another of the kick ass Doug Thorley Corvair Funny Car.

Tony Nancy was known as one of the best custom automotive interior guys in the world in his heyday, he was also one of the hardest running drag racers of his era. His career spanned from the days of his 22Jr roadster right on through the advent of the rear engine dragster. Nancy traveled the world racing his cars, which were always maintained at a very high level. His stuff was beautiful, and it ran like stink. The photos below are of his “Revel-liner” dragster. This era of early rear engine digger is our personal favorite type of digger. They were low-slung and bounced, heaved, and flopped around as though they were made of spaghetti. We really love the swoopy spoiler that takes what would normally be the front axle and turns it into art.

Next up we have the uber bitchin’ Doug’s Headers Corvair. Thorley ran a steel bodied Corvair in 1967 on his own and kicked ass with it. He won Indy that year and the car was running well into the 7s with regularity. He built a new version of the car with a fiberglass body. This shot comes from Irwindale in 1968. After the ’67 season, Thorley had Dick Bourgeois and Earl Wade take the car on tour. Wade worked for Dyno Don Nicholson previously and Bourgeois was a well known gas dragster runner. Something to note is the “Sigs Cams” logo on the rear quarter panel. This was the precursor to Erson cams, which is still in business today.
