Gag Us: Tesla Wins Lamest Auto Race In History

There’s nothing like a good ol’ fashioned, unabashed, stroke job news story. We found a great one touting the Tesla’s win at the Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally. The race is the automotive equivalent of a Star Trek convention. The story touted the fact that the Tesla beat out 100 other cars in the rally. We’re guessing at least 50 of them (or more) were homebuilt jobs.

So the Tesla, darling of the zombie-like, clean handed, tweed jacket wearing, dink media once again gets foisted up as the savior of the automotive world. We’re guessing that the author of this piece missed the memo that the total production of this car will be about 2400 units when all is said and done in 2012 and the mythical Model S that the company claims will be coming for 2012 doesn’t even have a plant built to produce it yet. The good news is that the company is starting to pull off of the $465 million the government loaned them.

But back to the amazing feat of the win at the tin foil hat nationals in Monaco. The capper for us was the clinching line of the story, “Is Tesla really revolutionizing the car industry — or, in fact, revolutionizing auto racing?” Is there a “neither” box we can check? Although, it would be pretty revolutionary if they manage to build the Model S without a factory. As much as the GM bailout irks us, those guys are at least crank out piles of killer motors and have a performance division and parts department that enthusiasts can access. The half a billion handed to Tesla makes veins bulge out of our forehead.
