Since we’ve bludgeoned you with road-course stuff this week with the look at the six-wheeler Tyrrell and a glimpse at the accomplishment of Colin Chapman we decided to point you in the direction of drag racing for this destination.
Located in sleepy Ocala, Florida, the Garlits museum has not only the drag museum, but also a classic car museum and the facility is also the home for the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
The west coast guys will call blasphemy, but Big Daddy’s place kicks the crap out of the Parks museum. The facility is wall-to-wall cars, motors, displays, etc. The NHRA Museum is a great take but you couldn’t manage an entire day in the place and if you happen to hit it when there is a theme exhibit that doesn’t suit your taste, it will make your stay that much shorter.
In Ocala, you’ll see all of the Swamp Rat lineage along with scores of other doorslammers, dragsters, Funnies, wheelstanders, Gassers, and just about everything else you can think of. If you are headed on a family vacation to the Orlando area you can make tracks and be in Ocala in about two hours if my memories from family vacations in the past hold true. The place is always jammin’ during the weekend of the Gator Nationals so if you really want to take it in, skip those few days. You’re almost guaranteed to see Garlits when you’re there if he’s not out of town on business.
