Go Or No Go? This 1976 Chevy Monte Carlo Custom Cloud Is Like Nothing We Have Ever Seen

Go Or No Go? This 1976 Chevy Monte Carlo Custom Cloud Is Like Nothing We Have Ever Seen
(By Scott Liggett) – When I see scary customs made out cars that I don’t care for, I just shake my head. Let’s face it, if Granny’s ’91 Buick LeSabre gets turned into a parade float from hell, do we really care beyond seeking mental help for the creator of the disaster on wheels?
This ’76 Monte Carlo is a bit harder for me to swallow since I always like the second generation Monte Carlo. I owned one for a few years as well. The Monte was GM’s luxury sport coupe that was marketed for those wanting something with more style and fancy stuff than a Malibu. They were a’ very successful model for Chevrolet from the first ones hit the show rooms in 1970.
Even though the Monte Carlo’s hood is long enough to land fighter jets on, they had tons of style and, what the Nascar boys found out, they handled spectacularly for such a big car. GM shoved the base 350 2 bbl engine all the way back against the firewall and hung it way low in the chassis. The results was more than 85% of the engine’s weight behind the front axle line creating a car that handled better than smaller cars of the era.
Not sure what the owner of this particular Monte Cloud was going for when they customized it into something closer resembling a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud from the ’60’s. All I can say is that his prescription medication is better than mine. There are some pluses. The body work does look to be done with some care. Although, thick white paint can hide the worst of body work. The interior doesn’t look to be touched at all, much less vacuumed in the last twenty years.
What do you guys think?

I have owned a 2nd gen Monte Carlo for over nearly 35 years. I would NEVER do that to one. It makes me sick to think that someone, anyone, could do that and think it was in good taste.

No. It is not this coachbuilder. The coachbuilder which produced Custom Cloud was Custom Cloud Motors from Florida. The owner was Jon Tedesco. 14 Monte Carlos were produced by the coachbuilder. Now they are the rarest Chevrolets after El Moroccos.
The Dunham company was another company. In fact, they produced a mix of a Chevrolet Corvette and a Cadillac Eldorado. The chassis was taken from a Corvette, the body from an Eldorado.
This car was used in a Bond movie (Let And Let Die) with Roger Moore.
The car was called Corvorado :)I

    ” .. like nothing we’ve ever seen ”

    Should be reworded to say..

“Like nothing we ever wanted to see or hope to ever see again ”

I mean really ! The 76 Monte Carlo was never a designers dream to begin with . But this thing has turned it into an absolute nightmare on four wheels – an assault on our eyes and a vulgar abomination

Yep, looks to be something customized like that back in the ’70s.

And it almost works, except the grille is too tall and too obnoxious. Take that trapezoid off the top of the grille and contour the hood to match, and it would be fairly decent for a ’70s luxury car.

Ok, so “fairly decent for a ’70s luxury car” might not be extravagant praise.

I have a soft spot for this gen Monte, so I’m not a fan, but I could see it being a hit with the dub crowd if you lifted it and put it on some 28″ wheels. Don’t forget to paint a “skittles” or M&Ms theme down the side though.

I never thought I’d say this, but seriously, this thing would look better made into a donk. The wheels on there don’t fill the wheelwells, and making the fender openings larger would fit the car’s proportions better – so it would need bigger wheels still.

Look closely at the pictures in the ad. There is another just in front of this car in the driveway. This dude has two of these…….things.

I just noticed that myself. I’m scared to think of what he might have squirreled away in a garage if those two are parked out in the elements like that.

I’m glad someone has a few of them! So, how much are they worth? I have one and want to sell it
It or was made to a convertible
          extremely excellent job on it.
