The Chevy small block isn’t dead. In fact, GM just announced that it will be putting more than $890 million into developing the engine and the facilities that will be producing it. Engine plants in Tonawanda, New York; St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada; Defiance, Ohio; and Bay City, Michigan will be the beneficiaries of the investment for new tooling and jobs. The speculation can now begin on the architecture of the next-gen motor. Will pushrods survive another iteration of the engine?
With all the doom and gloom that we’ve been living in around the future of high performance cars, V8 motors and the like, the news that there will be a next generation small block Chevy is truly good. While the newest generation of six cylinder engines, packing turbos and direct injection are cool, we’re still not at all ready to lose the V8 engine from the American automotive landscape.
While we kind of flipped out over the notion of GM “paying back” their government loans with other government money, the news that nearly $900 million will be spent on manufacturing in North America lifts our spirits some. The news that V8 engines will be mass produced for the foreseeable future has us grinning from ear to ear.
