Here’s a quick follow up note on two race tracks that were in serious limbo over the past couple of months. Happily we can tell you that both the drag strip at Irwindale Speedway in Irwindale, California and the long running Capitol Raceway in Maryland have both reopened for business under new management.
The new leadership at Capitol Raceway is being led by John Crane and BJ Herrell. The two men are working their tails off to improve the conditions of the track and to improve the reputation of the place. We got a quick note from a guy who was there for the first night and said it was like being at a new place. The staff was great, the concession stand food was better, and the whole place just felt like home again. That’s a pretty bitchin’ first impression considering that this fellow had not been to the track in years due to issues with the previous operators. Crane and Herrell have moved the track to an IHRA sanction and plan on getting the weekly bracket program fired up soon. Until then, test and tune action abounds. The track will be open this Friday and Saturday. Click here to see the track’s website for details.
On the other side of the country, Irwindale Raceway has announced that their weekly Thursday night drag racing program is back up and running on the eighth-mile track. The Thursday night test and tune had been a staple for SoCal drag racers until about three months ago when the track was shuttered due to management weirdness. All of those issues have been sorted and SoCal has a drag strip in the LA area again. That’s good news! The re-opening was held last week and over 250 cars and 2,000 spectators showed up to hang out and burn rubber on Thursday night. A fitting way to re-launch the popular program. We can’t find a website for the track as of yet, so just show up on Thursday at 4PM!
