Peter DeLorenzo’s Autoextremist.com is a neat place to stop every week for auto industry information and normally some scathing opinion pieces. This week was no exception, as Carroll Shelby and his company drew the ire of DeLorenzo following the announcement of Shelby’s “new” GT350 Mustang that will be available as an upgrade to 2011 Mustang GTs. To say that he wasn’t exactly impressed would be the understatement of the month.
Lorenzo’s criticisms and opinions are not exactly ground breaking, but their delivery is as pointed as we have ever seen. The idea that Shelby will stick his name onto basically any scheme that will make him a few bucks isn’t exactly new, but some of the claims being made by the company as to what exactly the 2011 GT350 will be are pretty wild. Shelby American president Amy Boylan claims that the company doesn’t, “take it apart and slap new parts on. We’ve done a complete body change.” Considering that these cars are not of body on frame construction, are they manufacturing uni-bodies at Shelby now?
You can’t take anything away from Shelby as a racer. He did exactly what he was hired to do at Ford, which was shock the world. He’s been able to turn that into a cash machine for the last fifty years. How long can he keep it up?
DeLorenzo seems ready to see it end.
Thanks for the tip Mr4Speed!
