Great Read: The Story of Pro Mod Diehard Frankie “The Madman” Taylor

Frankie Taylor is a drag racer’s drag racer. His knuckles are always bloody, his hair looks like it was styled by a spastic kid holding a weed whacker, and he hauls ass. At least when he’s not in the wall. Taylor is a very hard running Texas-based Pro Mod racer who competes a lot in Texas and also runs the ADRL circut. The ADRL World Finals, the vaunted “Battle for the Belts,” goes down this weekend at the Motorplex in Enis, Texas, and Taylor was profiled in the Galveston, Texas, Daily News. Our pal Ian Tocher at the ADRL tipped us on the story.

We’re not kidding when we tell you that Taylor is one hard charging guy. When things go wrong you are guaranteed one of two outcomes: Massive impact or an incredible save, as the guy does not know what the word lift means.

The story has some massive and glaring technical errors (“Chevrolet Studebaker” YIKES!) but actually does a good job at getting after the heart of the story which is the fact that Taylor is racing on pure grit. He’s in debt, he’s wrecked cars, and he basically begged one off of a guy for the race this weekend. He’s got no crew but himself and his family and still he goes on. In short, Frankie lives this sport of drag racing and not at the John Force glamour level.
