When the book of awesome Camaros is written (and it will be thick) this particular car will be ranked among the best ever. Expertly driven by Dave Strickler and wrenched on by Bill Jenkins, it was a 302-powered nightmare for anyone who ran up against it in Super Stock in 1968. Now all you need to own it is a freaking truckload of money. Maybe not a truck load, but $549,900 will do the trick.
The car has undergone a complete restoration from its days as a competitive racer. That process was overseen by the car’s then owner Jerry MacNeish who is the recognized authority on these cars. According to the eBay listing, the car is 100% period correct, right down to the construction of the engine to the specs that would have been run in 1968 when Strickler was ripping the shifter.
Interestingly, the car was only raced in 1968. It went out to pasture soon thereafter and, like seemingly all these stories, it languished in the hands of a couple of owners who repainted it and beat the snot out of it at strips all over creation. MacNeish tracked the car down in the early 1990s, and by 1994 it was hitting the strip again, this time in its correct “Old Reliable” livery. Jerry raced the car all the way up to 2008 (we actually had the pleasure of announcing a couple races where it ran!) and then tore it apart again to make it a nut and bolt piece of Camaro historical perfection.
$600,000 is a massive pile of money, but if we had it, we’d be pulling the handle on the M22 as it wound the 5.57 gears up and that little 302ci sang soprano all the way down the strip. In the world of BangShift.com, this is the ultimate Camaro that money can buy.
A big thanks to MSD’s Todd Ryden for the tip on this one!
