HIstoric “EPA” Superbird Restored; Opening Bid for Private Auction Sale is $3 Million

This is an odd car with some odd history. In essence it is the muscle car that ultimately brought an end to the muscle car era. This Superbird was owned by the EPA, was chocked full of testing equipment, and had a custom-made adjustable suspension because it was used to chase jets down runways to test the air from the exhaust. It also tested car emissions.

Ray Nichels, a fabricator from Indiana, was tasked with modifying the car to accept all the testing stuff, modifying the suspension, and tweaking the motor for the highest performance possible. According to the guys who restored the car and who are trying to sell it on behalf of an anonymous owner, this car had a strong influence on the government’s decision to ban leaded fuels. That in turn had all kinds of junky effects on performance and factory high-performance options.

We never knew this car existed and it has all kinds of interesting devices inside it, but three millions bucks? That seems steep.

Here’s a link to a Hartford Courant story on the car.
