Icons of Speed Auction to Showcase Historical Drag Machinery

The epic “Icons of Speed and Style” auction to be held at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles this Saturday by RM Auctions will feature a lot of stuff, we’re drooling over the ancient drag iron that will be part of the sale. Weirdly, the New York Times is as well, as you can read by clicking here.

All of the drag cars that are headed up for sale were owned by one guy who was planning on opening a major league car museum in Winnemucca, Nevada, but then the economy went to pot and his welth went with it. He is now liquidating the collection.

The stuff is mind blowing, and one item in particular will give a good indication of how badly the collector car market is hurting: it’s the infamous “million dollar Chevelle,” the LS6-powered beast raced by Ray Allen in Stock Eliminator during the early 1970s. The car sold for a cool million at the B-J auction a few years ago and is now ready to changs hands again.

We’re shocked to be reading about vintage drag cars in the New York Times, but it’s a good kind of shocked. If you are in the LA area be at the Petersen on Saturday. You will not regret it.
