There have been some wild drag racing promotions over the years and very few of them have ended up being what the promoter planned or intended. There was the infamous “AutoFest 2000” held at what is now Palm Beach International Raceway that goes down as one of the greatest financial failures in drag racing history. At about the same time there was the ADRA debacle which was a proposed nostalgia series that was nationwide. A man named Bill Chapman was in charge of the operation (of which I sent a resume to work on the magazine they were going to put out) and he disappeared with his wife and everyone’s money, never to be seen again. Both of those situations seem like small potatoes to the one we’re about to inform you of.
A group called “Former Glory” based in Canada is planning on putting a professional level drag race on…in Cuba…with a combined purse of ONE MILLION DOLLARS. If you want to read that last line again, go ahead. We’ll wait for you. The proposed venue is an old, abandoned runway that was used by the Soviets during the era of the Cuban Missile Crisis. We’re not sure what type of surface that will provide the promised 20 top fuelers, 20 funny cars, 10 pro stocks, and various other classes. As the event is dependent on people signing up and actually transporting their stuff to Cuba, we’re not sure how they can promise car counts like that. Also, we’re thinking that some American companies that sponsor these cars won’t be all that excited to have their names displayed in a Communist country that the USA has essentially viewed as an enemy for decades. In reading the site, the Former Glory people basically tell the teams that it is on their dime to get their cars and equipment to Miami and then they’ll ship it the 90-miles to Cuba. Let’s not talk about the whole issue of American drivers needed to then travel to Canada and over the Cuba to compete on this old Soviet runway.
Other weird stuff came up in the proposed levels of ticketing for spectators. Photos of Bruton Smith level drag strips here in the USA are used to illustrate the “gold” areas and other tiered ticketing options. Mind you, the ariel shot of this place looks like an old airstrip. The seating numbers depicted on the site seem to indicate that there will be grandstands there for some 30-40,000 people. With nothing existing, it makes the proposed event date of October 24-26 2014. Another point to be raised is that the NHRA has not released its 2014 schedule as of yet, so this thing could be planned right on top of an NHRA event, essentially insuring that there won’t be nearly the amount of cars advertised even available to compete! (Taking all of the other insane rigamaroll teams would be faced with in traveling to Cuba). Currently the NHRA operates their Las Vegas event on that weekend. Maybe the Former Glory guys are going to pressure them to make a change. Yeah, that’s it.
Do we even need to go into the million dollar purse? Or the fact that with the proposed “seating” numbers and three sold out days, roughly 1% of the entire population of Cuba would be attending the event. The parking lot would look bitchin’ because everyone would be rolling in 1950s American cars, but let’s be real here. That ain’t happening. Other eyebrow raising things include the promotional video (below) that is a big string of NHRA clips and video (we’re not sure how they are going to feel about that stuff being used…oh wait, we do. They’ll be pissed.) and virtually every other thing involved with this event.
The whole thing is so weird it almost seems like some sort of a parody or something. You really need to check the site out for yourself and see what this proposed race is. Tell us if we’re being too harsh, but we’re thinking that this event is going to fall slightly short of expectations….and ever actually happening.

Yah this smells of scam. It’s way too over the top to be real and way too extravegant to be feasible. The logistics for getting the equipment and drivers to Cuba alone are completely wacked. Never mind the fact that I’m sure NHRA is already making moves to sue the hell out of these guys for the unlicensed use of NHRA clips in the video. They are promising 4 wide fuel racing on an abandoned air strip that has never been used as a drag strip before… yah good luck with that… Can’t see Force and the boys circling this date on their calender anytime soon.

I’m guessing the folks in Cuba don’t have a lot of disposable income for attending drag races.
Even a lot of NHRA races can’t bring in 20 teams in the nitro categories.

First off the poster of this has made slanderous comments and the last time I looked at what a scam is, it certainly is not one that loses money or dore not ask for money. SHOWDOWN IN CUBA – HOT ROD SHOW – DRAG RACING – ROCKABILLY PARTY
Celebrate 64 yrs of Hot Rod History.
—-THAT is the basic theme of the event. Where? Does not really matter, but bringing together these 3 themes is not new, but because of the location and what Cuba, presents, it makes it for a unique opportunity and especially for Drag Racing which is non-existent in Latin America and South America.
This is about expanding our sport to where it is not being considered by the NHRA and IHRA in recent years and those countries are in our own backyard, yet we go to Dubai and Saudi Arabia and even Russia? Why? Because they realize that that is where the money is and that is their own consideration and makes good business sense.
So why not Latin America? Because NHRA and IHRA do not see any money there, but NHRA has looked into Russia and knee deep in that project and most of you did not know that and especially the ones calling me a commie. I guess all of us that are fortunate to deal with the communists are commies? Well America’s biggest financier is China. And to those that say this event should be helping the American economy instead. I m no Ghandi. That is up to your president to do. We just want to have a fun vacation.
So the question remains Why Cuba?
1 word. AUTHENTICITY! Nothing else. By that I mean regarding the theme of the event. I guess we could be satisfied with the normal summer day of looking and showing our own restored classic cars, but that is a show and now touch approach and certainly you would not be able to get a ride in one of them even if you wanted to. So why Cuba? Because it is full of these cars. That is Cuba, the world’s automotive Classic car museum. Ride in them everywhere and anywhere!
To Latin America and South America, Cuba is very important while we in North America are complacent with that fact. If we want to make an impact in this hemisphere, Cuba offers the best opportunity to reach all of them in one shot. Mexico would not work, Columbia is in civil war, Brazil really don’t care much because they have F1 and IndyCar and so does Mexico. But what about the other countries. Are we going to wait until F1 and Indy Car expand to those areas and take that racing interest? NHRA and IHRA have the North and Europe, the south is all open. Now tell me that is not good business sense.

This opportunity presented itself a year ago and we have been working very hard to make it happen. Nothing about Cuban relations, politics, just a real fun vacation for a family with dancing, classic cars and drag racing? Just imagine then atmosphere at something like that where 30,000+ of our CLUB are on a vacation and we get to take our toys! Wow! Sign me up!
Millions of people go to Cuba from all over the world every year for their world class beaches on vacation. Canada, Europe, Australia, Russia and even the US. So our proposal is not out of the ordinary, except that we will take everyone at once. Unprecedented for Cuba and more so for the World and Drag Racing.
So why not Cuba ? It has been 64 years of Hot Rods, 63 years for NHRA, 60 Years for foreign cars in Cuba. See the similarities? So Why not Cuba?
