Excellent news for LA area racers as it has been announced that the drag strip at Irwindale Speedway will be re-opening next week on 4/26. Apparently on 4/19 the new management will take control and the track will open a week later. This marks the return of a much needed strip in the greater LA area and we think that it is imperative that local racers and hot rodders support this drag strip that they came so close to losing! Granted, it was through no fault of the racers that this place nearly went away forever. It was poor financial management from the last facility operator that brought on this local drag racing drought, but even still, it is doubly as important to show up, hang out, buy a hot dog, or beat the hell out of your car on the eighth mile strip.
Not much more to add to this great news other than one last bit of encouragement to LA area readers, hot rodders, car guys, and motorsports fans to support the facility. Without business, the place will disappear again and that would REALLY suck!
To quote a story about the re-opening, Jim Cohan who has been overseeing the place since the whole situation went sideways with former management plans on operating the strip every Thursday and running a few night events on Saturdays and other programs as well. Here’s what the story said, “Cohan’s group (which has been in operation at the Irwindale facility for some seven years now) will stage regular Thursday night street-legal events, a number Sunday Summit Series races, and, perhaps even a few special Saturday nights under the lights on the Irwindale eighth-mile.”
Great news!

Shall be there! Awsome news!
Brian, I thought that was a quarter mile track !! Nice to see a facility come back.
That’s great news and good to hear. I’ve always wanted to make a pass at Bakersfield and Irwindale so hopefully next Winter.
