2004 NASCAR champ Kurt Busch will compete at the upcoming NHRA Gatornationals in Super Gas, according to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. In a very neat twist, Busch will be driving his 1970 Challenger which sports a turbocharged Hemi and is street legal. Some scuttlebutt we heard that is not in the Vegas Review Journal story is that he will be competing sans-electronics. Super Gas racers will be lining up to take him on in round one.
Busch got his Super Gas license at zMax Dragway last month at Roy Hill’s Drag Racing School. The drag racing bug is not just limited to him. There are more than a few NASCAR drivers who dig the quarter mile. Heck, when Jeremy Mayfield had his huge auction a few months back, there were a few drag cars in the mix.
With all the negative attention the NHRA has been getting lately, this will be a welcome piece of good media news for the sanctioning body. If Busch does compete in a car that he’s footbraking, we’re thinking he’ll be a first round runner up. That being said, we wish him all the luck. It would be cool to see a foot braker succeed in a class so heavily invested in electronics.
