LIFE Gallery: Bizarro Automotive Concepts From the Past

LIFE Gallery: Bizarro Automotive Concepts From the Past

People have been trying, since the inception of the automobile, to design a better automobile. Since we’re all still pretty much rolling around in glorified versions of the Model T, most of the far-out ideas have been too weird for mass consumption. Take the vehicle pictured in this blog item. It’s the 1958 Ford Nucleon concept, and it was supposed to be powered by a small nuclear reactor. Like we said.

The flying car is one of those fantasies that works way better on paper as well. Since ground-based vehicles still account for tens of thousands of deaths per year in this country alone, the mere thought of the havoc caused by flying cars is chilling.

This fantastic gallery of photos from the LIFE Magazine archive will take you through some of the weirdest ideas that have entered the public view when it comes to the future of the automobile. Thank the automotive gods that none made it past the prototype stage.
