Lohnes’ Pic of the Week: Funny Car on a Pole

Lohnes’ Pic of the Week: Funny Car on a Pole

Lebanon Valley Dragway is a great dragstrip in eastern New York State. It’s got a great history as a track that all the great touring professional racers hit during their barnstorming trips across the country in the ‘60s and ‘70s. It’s one of the tracks where Shirley Muldowney cut her teeth as well.

Dragstrips are not like road courses that are known for their layout. Nope, dragstrips are normally known for their oddball features or kitschy facets that just stick out in your memory.

I worked at Lebanon Valley Dragway when I was in college as an announcer and on one of my last days before graduation I brought my camera to take some photos to remember the place by. One thing I couldn’t forget to shoot was the track’s infamous Funny Car on a Pole.

I’d by lying if I said I knew the history of how it got there, but I am assuming that the late track operator Vincent Barletta had a hand in it. Vinny was a real character and a guy who really saved the track from neglect and built a tower that was one of the nicest I’ve ever worked in.

Recently, I heard that they took this thing down, I sure hope not. I know there are folks who race there that frequent this website that can confirm or deny this.

So who knows the whole story of the Funny Car on a Pole?
