Lohnes’ Pic of the Week: What It Feels Like to Be a Drag Strip Manager

This odd photo is of one Glenn Grow, the former track manager of Lebanon Valley Dragway. Glenn was a great guy and the first track manager I worked for on a weekly basis as an announcer. I’m not sure what he is up to now, but I laugh every time I see this photo.

It’s not been doctored up at all. At the moment I snapped the shutter, a jet dragster in the other lane of the track had just blasted out a major league smoke cloud, causing the weird white background you see in the photo. The dragster in the near lane must have been in the midst of a burner pop attack as Glenn has his hands clamped firmly over his ears.

This is about the physical manifestation of the stress level most track managers operate under. The ones who aren’t complete wieners are awesome guys with skin about three quarters of a mile thick. Glenn was of the latter persuasion. I saw him fend off more than one totally apoplectic racer up in the tower.

In case you are wondering, standing between two jets is awesome, but standing between two Top Fuel dragsters will give you a veiner for a month.
