Mayfield on ESPN: Takes Shots at NASCAR, Admits Career is Over

Jeremy Mayfield appeared on ESPN’s Outside the Lines on Sunday morning. It was his first nationally televised one-on-one interview since being suspended indefinitely from NASCAR for failing a drug test. This seems to be the first move made by his newly named high-profile law firm to rehab (bad choice of words) his public image in the face of a fight was he was losing badly to NASCAR.

In the interview, Mayfield came through with a couple of memorable quotes. The best by our estimation came when Mayfield was asked about his place in NASCAR and why he thought he was the target of the new policy. He replied, “I was worth more to them as a failed drug test then I am as a driver/owner for my own team.”

We could argue that Mayfield came off as sympathic as he has been in any stretch of this saga. The guy knows that his goose is cooked in NASCAR and if it turns out he is innocent of what he’s being accused of, that’s a bad deal. On the other side, the “false positive” that Mayfield is claiming, is refuted in a good story on Fanhouse.com by a doctor who claims it to be an impossibility.
