Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan, has set a new track record. For rainouts. The track is suffering its worst year (in terms of weather) in its nearly six-decade existence. Adding pressure is the fact that the guy promoting the track is in his first year. Welcome to the race track business.
Operating a race track is a nerve wracking business. Imagine owning a company that couldn’t function in the rain. Every day you have a 50/50 shot of actually generating any revenue. Believe it or not, for most tracks, that’s the last thing on the worry list. It’s a long document.
If you’re in the neighborhood of Marne, buy a ticket for a race this season and support your local track. Hell, if you are anywhere and there is a local race track of any denomination, get yourself out there and buy a grandstand seat before the season is out. Tracks disappear quickly and often without fanfare. From our experience, once they are gone, they do not come back.
