Money No Object: 1973 AMC Javelin AMX – Echoes Of A Cop’s Dream Machine

Money No Object: 1973 AMC Javelin AMX – Echoes Of A Cop’s Dream Machine

In 1971 and 1972, the State of Alabama utilized the AMC Javelin as a state trooper vehicle. You might think that the 5.0 Mustang SSP program was the first time a pony car got tagged for cop duty, but no…a deal between the Alabama Department of Public Safety and R.P. “Doc” Burke and his Reinhardt Motors dealership saw two 1971 Javelins offered up for testing straight off of the showroom floor, and after two engines and a testing regime that wound up giving the 401-powered Javelin AMX tester the title of “the most abused police car in the history of Alabama”, ADPS went ahead and made the call and for the next two years, purchased 401-powered Javelins for troopers. Now that would be one lucky day indeed for a trooper…the keys to your very own stomper. According to legend, the only car that came close to out-running a state Javelin was a Pontiac GTO Judge that was an even match until the Judge driver wound up running out of talent and into a ditch.

This isn’t one of the sixteen known remaining Alabama Hammers. This isn’t even a tribute. This is a 360/four-speed Javelin AMX that’s well optioned, nicely restored, wearing silver paint and the eight-slot wheels that the highway patrol cars used. It looks purposeful, doesn’t it? It wears it’s musclecar features well, with those prominent fender bulges and that simple but trick black stripe claiming violence, but it also looks like it could run up on somebody and suddenly be awash in flashing blue light as Officer Friendly prepares to skin your hide for your misgivings.

Fast, or furious…either way, we’re in lust.

I had one a long time ago. It was in bad shape due to alot of years in a barn. I had to sell it due to the fact that parts are hard to find and lack of funds. It is since been restored by the new owner and i wish i still had it. It was wery futuristic inside and had special seatcovers. It was cool as hell.

A friend had a 73 AMX in high school, dark bronze with a saddle interior. Unbelievably pretty car with a engine turned dash that would put a Pontiac to shame.

I really like these cars overall, but the front fender bulges always kinda struck me as a bit odd for some reason. Someone put a lot of love into this one. I’m curious now about what it will fetch at auction.

I had several neighbors that were DEA agents in NYC, there cars were Javelins with 401 engines and automatic trans. I remember 2 agents driving them, several differant cars/colors. Someone must of been thinking French Connection chase.
Neither guy said they ever chased anybody.
