File this under great news. Mopar has re-upped its agreement with NHRA to back the Mopar Challenge Race Series, a three event battle that pits the hairiest Super Stockers in the land against each other in heads up competition.
The series will kick off at the Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion at Beech Bench Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on June 18-20th. The US Nationals will be the next meeting of the elephants, and to cap off the trilogy of races, the final installment will be held at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio, September 24-26.
These races draw the cream of the crop in the SS/AH crowd. The Westcott boys, Fred Henson, Dave Barton, and the rest of the ilk will be there running their junk heads-up against each other.
The SS/AH cars have evolved to a point that truly defies logic. Yes, the rules are more liberal than they were back in the late 1960s, but these cars are running in the eight second zone! The engines are as powerful as they are moody. There are precious few builders who screw together a legit SS/AH motor that can hang during these races. Those motors are normally sent back to the builder for a “freshen-up” before 20 passes are put on them.
For the small crowd of guys who run these cars, the Hemi Challenge races may actually mean more than national event wins. It is extremely rare that a SS/AH car wades itself through eliminations during a national event. These monsters are electrifying to watch beat up on one another!
