Back in May we reported on a bizarre accident where a fan attending a drag race at Harrells Raceway in the small town of Harrells, NC was killed by a flying engine that broke free from a crashing car. Sadly we’re back with more bad news from the track, where a man was shot to death in the parking lot of the track according to a story in the Fayetteville Observer.
Oddly the story goes out of its way to mention that the track is not sanctioned by the IHRA, so we’re guessing that means it operates as an “outlaw” track, meaning that it does not follow the rule book of a recognized drag racing sanctioning body. There are lots of tracks, particularly in the Southeast which operate as “outlaws”, but it certainly seems that Harrells is taking that term seriously.
If the track is insured by a large company, which we’d hop that they were, it stands to reason that their policy is being reviewed due to this incident along with the earlier fatality.
We hope better days are ahead for Harrells because if they get worse, there may no longer be a Harrells Raceway. We don’t want to see another strip close, especially under these circumstances.
Police are investigating the shooting and apparently the man who pulled the trigger was seen by several people. Hopefully he is apprehended without incident.
