Not Shocking: Bobby Rahal Thinks that Vintage Racing Could be Popular

Bobby Rahal and a couple of partners have started up a new vintage road racing series called Legends of Motorports. They seem to think that they have stumbled upon some amazing thing that no one else has ever thought of yet, USA Today seems to agree by the tone of the piece they published on the new series. Guess what, they haven’t.

The fact that the March Meet draws more cars for one weekend than their series will for most of their whole season combined, the fact that dozens of drag strips hold small vintage or nostalgia events and the fact that the NHRA embraced the vintage movement years ago, is not relevant apparently.

One of our favorite things about current nostalgia or vintage drag racing is the fact that prize money is limited. Simply put, no one is doing it to get rich and that keeps a level of honesty and purity maintained. We’re not sure if the “Legends of Motorsports” series will have payouts, but with sponsorship from Rolex, Lotus and Road and Track magazine there’s money in the air.

It’s humorous to us when things are presented as new inventive ideas when they clearly are not. We wish them the best of luck on the series and hopefully it grows year over year.
