In case you didn’t realize, the whole car hobby thing that we all know and love is kind of under attack. Nothing has weenie car haters all wound up more than the fact that all three domestic automakers have hot cars on the market with V8 motors and lots of rumbly goodness.
This editorial from the New York Times asserts that we, as Americans have a taste problem. Damn us and our affection for larger more powerful cars that we use to traverse distances in one day that some European drivers don’t see for a year.
There are gems a-plenty in this screed. On the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro: “The three cars might help carmakers’ bottom lines, but they are unlikely to reduce the United States’ carbon footprint.” Wow.
Or
this, which was our favorite line out of the whole maddening wreck: “Automakers would only have to cut the weight and power of the fleet back to where they were in 1980.” Oh really? Just that easy? No problem, because all those cars from 1980 were such a pleasure to drive.
This is an unsigned editorial that is running in today’s paper. We’re hoping it was written by a class of 6th graders on some summer detention program because if it was written by someone who claims that they have knowledge of the auto industry, it’s truly a travesty.
Support SEMA, drive your junk, and get ready for a long fight for our rights as hot rodders, car crafters, etc. We’re going to be in for one.
