Seven days, 2,827 miles, and ten individual track events make up the 2016 Tire Rack One Lap Of America. While the event might be considered a spiritual successor to creator Brock Yates’ more infamous event, the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash…aka, the Cannonball Run…it’s not so much. Think of it more as a Drag Week for road-racing types. The plan is simple: events are laid out and using one set of tires for the entire trip and your own luck (no support crews), you race, then you drive. A long ways, at that. For the 2016 season, events are laid out throughout the northeastern quarter of the contiguous United States and include the skidpad at Tire Rack, Pittsburgh International Race Complex, Palmer Motorsports Park, Road America, Summit Point Raceway, Great Lakes Dragway, the Autobahn Country Club, and that little slice of road-racing heaven in my backyard, the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park on the northern end of Bowling Green, Kentucky. To put it mildly, the participants are already feeling the effects as they got started on Day Five of the fun. A Mercedes had blown an engine, and on a suggestion, the team sourced a beater Ford Crown Victoria from Craigslist to finish out the week in. One of the seven Ford Festiva SHOguns in existence was present, sporting the strangest exhaust setup I’ve ever seen in person on the outside of the rear bumper, looking well-used. A Porsche 918 Hybrid creeped silently past the garages. Corvettes, BMWs and Vipers were pretty prevalent, but the small-block Datsun 240Z, the second-generation Camaro, and the V8-swapped Porsche 944 were rocking the house. The big surprise, however, was the pair of Toyota Sienna minivans. The white one, more or less a stocker, is being driven by Top Gear USA’s Rutledge Wood, who is currently having an absolute blast out on the event. The other Sienna (black with yellow stripes) cannot be stock…if it is, I want proof, because of all the things I expected to see at NCM, a Toyota Sienna drifting into the chicane after the straightaway was not on the menu!
