RacingJunk Find: A Super Clean 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone

We have to admit to a strange, macabre fascination involving Mercury Comet Cyclones. When we were just little BangShifters, there was a fatal accident involving one of these cars in our home town. The one that claimed the life of the speed freak driver was packing non-factory big-block Ford power. Since then, something about these cars has always stuck with us. We hope no one wrecks the beauty we found on RacingJunk.com’s newish muscle car section. This one is super nice.

Comets have the distinction of being the first cars used as plugs for flip-top funny car bodies, which is cool in its own right. 1965 was the second year for the Cyclone package and Mercury sold 12,347 of them priced at $2,695. They were decently light, coming in at 2,994 pounds shipping weight. The engines were 289s with the hottest one being rated at 225 hp. That’s not a whole lot, but with the right bits and pieces, the little 289 could be made into a respectable screamer.

This particular car has been completely restored with new everything, including a 302 build by the Ford freaks at 422 Motorsports. It also has a four-speed trans and the correct factory fiberglass hood with the twin scoops mounted right in the front.

We’d be all over this car in a heartbeat if we had the cashola. We’d also install a five point harness as to not end up like the poor soul who first got us interested in Comet Cyclones.
