The Boss 429 is a legendary powerplant from the epic muscle car era. Some would argue that in street trim, the engine left a lot on the table, but its massive ports and hemispherical combustion chambers it could make big power on the top end, and Smokey Yunick built a 1,000hp version and turned it loose on NASCAR back in the day. The sheer woah factor of popping the hood and showing one of these monsters is worth the price of admission.
We were cruising around RacingJunk.com recently and saw a company called Detroit Competition Engineering which can screw together new Boss 429-based combos up to 604ci. The guts of the motor are all pretty hard core with a 4340 forged Scat crank, H-beam rods, Diamond pistons, and a host of other good junk. The capper, literally, are the Kaase Boss 9 or the truly bad ass Shotgun Hemi Aluminum cylinder heads and Boss 429 valve covers.
Everyone immediately thinks about sticking one of these in a Mustang. We think jamming one into a late 1960’s LTD coupe would be a sinister street sweeper.
