Would You Rather, ‘Class of ’57’ Edition: Chevy Stepside or F-350 Utility?

Would You Rather, ‘Class of ’57’ Edition: Chevy Stepside or F-350 Utility?

This edition of Would You Rather gets its inspiration from the Statler Brothers. No, they weren’t a drag racing team or a tuning shop; the Statler Brothers were a country-ish/gospel-ish singing group in the ‘60s and ‘70s. They perhaps most famously sang backup for Johnny Cash on the Live at Folsom Prison and Live at San Quentin albums—most evidently on the tune “Daddy Sang Bass,” but they had their own career on the country charts, including the tune “Class of ‘57.” You can look that one up on your own, but after listening to the Statler Brothers recently, I figured I’d find some ‘57s that aren’t Chevy cars and why not look in the Pacific Northwest? So which of these V8 pickup trucks would you have from the year of the Space Age: a ‘57 Chevy Stepside or a ‘57 Ford Utility Truck?

We’ll start with the Stepside, which is up for sale near Seattle. The patina looks natural and perfectly preserved, like a good mixture of sunfading and just general wear-and-tear. Since the seller indicates it’s a “drivable project,” that suggests it’s gotten around some.

The mods list reads like the truck is nicely modernized: four-wheel disc brakes, 3.73 gears in the rear end, and what certainly does not look like the original 283 that would have come in one of these. If it is, it has undergone a rebuild with a fresh coat of paint. Either way, it looks pretty healthy under the hood.

The seller suggests it will need a few things like a carb rebuild (or upgrade to a four-barrel), some fixes to the steering gear, some wiring, and a proper floor shifter. There’s a bit of rust here and there, but nothing alarming for a 59-year-old truck. The seller is asking $7,500 for this one.

It’s likely that opinion here will seldom fall in the DMZ between Ford and Chevy; truck-owning rivalries are about as fierce as it gets in the automotive world. That said, even GM guys might think this old Ford F-350 with utility boxes is pretty cool.

I can’t think of a more killer way to get work done—or perhaps to haul important party supplies to the race track for after-hours fun—than with this thing. Gone is the original Y-Block V8 and in its place, says the seller, a Ford 429 and a four-speed. If that’s true, this thing would really be a lot of fun just getting to the work that needs doing.

So what would it be? A tastefully updated ‘57 Stepside or a totally rockin’ ‘57 Ford F-350? We’ll let you argue this one out in the comments while we’re just countin’ Flowers on the Wall.

I’d take the Chevy cause I grew up riding in the back of a 57 that had stacks. Those are great childhood memories!

The F150, no question about it. I mean, come ON! The Ford doesn’t have a chevy engine in it! If it was rusted up to the doorhandles, that alone would still make it the better choice!

I assume the service body is there so you can carry the tools needed to fix it.

    Chevy, all day, everyday.

I’d swap boxes on the two and get rid of that ugly fugging Far Out Road Disaster.
