Shelby American Now Offering An EcoBoost Mustang Variant –

In a move that should have been expected, Shelby American is now offering a tuned Mustang based on the four-cylinder EcoBoost. With the Mustang taking over tons of markets and selling as fast as Ford can make them, it was only a matter of time before worldwide enthusiasts started demanding more performance, and with the Shelby name tied hard to the fabled pony car, it was naturally a next-step move.

“Ever since Ford announced that its terrific new Mustang would be available worldwide, requests for Shelby versions of the car have rolled in from across the globe,” said Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International and CEO of Shelby American. “Since the majority of Mustangs that Ford offers in many of those countries will be the EcoBoost model, our team has been developing a Shelby GT model for the nimble new turbocharged four cylinder car, as well as the V8 powered GT. This package was specifically developed for the recently announced network of Shelby Mod Shops that will stretch from Europe to South Africa, China and Australia. They will add the Shelby package to a Ford Mustang that a customer has purchased in that area.”

For $23,995 plus an EcoBoost-powered Mustang, Shelby American will bring the power level up to 335 horsepower (at least a 20 hp jump) by adding an exhaust kit and tune, along with the tasty Shelby bodykit pieces and a suspension upgrade. Since it’s Shelby, the catalog of happiness can be picked through for as much power as you want and/or as much money that you’ve got. If you’re one of those guys that want to explore replacing displacement and have a Ford streak a mile wide, this one is for you!

The old chicken farmer will take comfort in the fact that so far in the UK alone, most Mustangs sold are V8s.

Four cylinders, no matter what their output and performance, in a Shelby Mustang are an abomination and disrespect the Shelby heritage.

I’ll climb down off my (FE-powered) soap box now…….

20 hp and some suspension mods for $23,000? That’s $16,000 more than you’d pay to start with a Mustang GT in the first place. Sorry, but this doesn’t look like a good deal. If I wanted a four banger with Shelby’s name on it, hunting down a clean GLHS would be a better bargain.
