Spy Shots: Ford Cobra Jet 5.4L Dragster by Aeromotive

Earlier today we told you about the new Aeromotive Top Fuel dragster and mentioned the company’s new Cobra Jet Super Comp car. We thought you probably needed to know more.

Aeromotive Fuel Systems, which is celebrating its 15th Anniversary in 2009, will be attending this weekend’s O’Reilly SummerNationals in Topeka and competing with what is arguably the most unusual rear-engine dragster you’ll find in Super Comp. It’s powered by a stock Ford 5.4L Cobra Jet engine and Steve Matusek hoped to run 8.90 at around 160mph.

Matusek will pilot the dragster and also competing in Comp with his familiar 6-second, 240-mph, twin-turbo Mustang.

Check out the spy photos we got of the Cobra Jet dragster going together for final assembly. We dig the zoomies! Below the photos are some notes we got from Jesse Powell of Aeromotive.

Attached is the Artist rendition of the Cobra Jet Dragster we are going to unveil in Topeka.  Steve is entered in Comp in the Mustang and Super Comp in the dragster.  The dragster is turning out VERY COOL. We have taken a stock 5.4 L Cobra Jet engine, are marrying it up to an aftermarket ECU and hoping to run 8.90 at over 160 with a production engine. This combination will be Aeromotive’s effort to market an off the shelf engine with a retrofit kit including: mid plate, bracketry, fuel system, power glide Tranny and case, pre programmed ECU, fuel system etc, everything you need to “bolt in” a Ford 5.4 L Cobra Jet into a tube chassis race car.

And something for the purist, it will have zoomies…. How cool is that?

Hoping to test next week, I will keep you posted.  Additionally, the fuel system in this car will employ (and be the first dragster to employ) a “Stealth Fuel System”.  In other words the pump will be mounted in the fuel cell. (see attached pictures)

Additionally, 18-year-old Katie Peters, out of Topeka, Kansas, will be taking over the controls of the snake after Steve shakes the car down at the Topeka National event.  Katie and her parents Pernell and Deanne Peters will be part of the Aeromotive / Ford Cobra Jet Racing team which will also include Amanda Matusek in the 08 Cobra Jet AA/SA Mustang which will have a complementary scheme to the dragster and is rolling out of Larry Larson’s shop this weekend. Pernell is a regional Manager for O’Reilly Auto Parts.
