Stolen Cars Tied to Global Terrorism

We ran into a pretty shocking story out of Canada that suggests that international terrorists are using car thefts to fund their evil doings. At first the premise seemed a little out there, until we got to the part of the story that mentions the FBI thwarting a bomb making operation in Iraq. It states that the bad guys were stuffing a car registered in Texas with explosives. Creepy.

The story concentrates on Canadian cars that are stolen, but let’s be realistic here. If it is happening north of the border, logic says that it is happening here as well. Canadian police said that there is an “absolute pattern” that the thefts may be directly or indirectly funding terrorist operations, although there is no direct evidence.

One of the piece of the puzzle is the jump in the number of stolen cars headed to places like Nigeria, Lebanon, and Eastern Europe. The Canadian authorities believe that when they arrive at those destinations, the cars are sold to benefit the terrorist groups.

We’re not too stuffy to admit that the story of the vehicle from Texas showing up at a bomb making facility in Iraq stuffed full of explosives sends shivers down our collective spines.
