Adding A Winch And Toolbox To A Trailer: Puddin Gets His New Car Hauler Ready For Action

We’re going to be doing some trailer tech in the coming months here on BANGshift.com as we have a new trailer project to do some work on, but for many of you, there are a few good things you can do to the trailer you already have that will make it a lot more useful in hauling cars or whatever it is you carry. If you haul anything on wheels you really should have a winch, and because you will need straps to hold stuff down, you should also have a toolbox to hold all your tie-downs. There are a lot of options for both winches and toolboxes, but two of the most cost-effective and easy to install are featured right here.

Puddin is going to install a tongue box on his open car trailer and also a winch up front for pulling new projects onto the trailer. He’s going with a 12,000 winch which is total overkill for most anything he’ll put on this trailer, but the price was right. Remember when deciding on your winch, that a rolling load is completely different than a lifting load. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to push a 5,000 pound car in your driveway because it would take 5,000 lbs of force which you can’t do. It takes a fraction of the car’s weight to make it roll and to roll it up on a trailer, if it is rolling properly. But sometimes projects don’t roll worth a crap at all, so it can be helpful to have something bigger. In my opinion, a single-car open trailer needs a winch that is 3,500 lbs or more. We’ve had smaller on our trailers and they have worked perfectly, but if we were trying to pull something out of the woods or somewhere stuck and then on the trailer we might have needed more.

As for tool boxes, there are all kinds of styles but make sure it fits on your trailer in a way that won’t hinder loading, or keep you from being able to turn extra sharp because it hangs off the tongue.

Check out Puddin as he gets his winch and tool box on below.
