How To MIG Weld Thin Sheet Metal – GMC G10 Boogie Van Rust Repair ( PT 2 )

In Part 1 Karl showed us how to make the big ol’ rolled quarter panel and rocker for a bitchin GMC G10 Boogie Van and in this video he’s going to go over how to install the thing using some simple techniques and a trusty MIG welder. There are a lot of people who swear that the only way to install sheet metal is with a TIG welder, but if you do it right then a MIG welder will absolutely do the job.

Making sheetmetal panels can be so daunting, but thanks to guys like Karl at Make It Kustom we can all be inspired and learn how to do this kind of fabrication ourselves. In this video Karl is going over building a “rolled quarter panel” for an old Chevy van but the same process can be used for other quarter panels and rocker panels. He uses his English wheel, his brake and some hand tools to make this giant rolled quarter/rocker. One thing I love about Karl is that he walks us through the entire process, including stuff that he might not do right the first time, or things that might save us time. This guy clearly knows what he is doing, and it’s fun to see his process.

In this video you’ll get to see the panel being made, how quickly it actually starts to take shape, and then how nice it matches the stock profile. In Part 2 we’ll see it going into its new home.

Here is the video description:

On this episode of Make It Kustom, I continue to repair the rust on the GMC G10 boogie van. We talk in depth about technique for repairing rust and welding on thin sheet metal with a MIG Welder.
