We’ve been sharing videos from our friend Lake Speed, The Motor Oil Geek, for the past several months as he has shined a spotlight on the engine oil and lubricants world. There is so much more going on with motor oil than you might think, and Lake is amazingly good at explaining the challenges that different oils face, the technology used to make them work, and the realities behind the oil industry in general. If you haven’t watched the other videos we’ve posted, you certainly should as there are a bunch of great ones. Everything from whether or not the engine oil life indicator in your car is legit, whether the brand of oil you use matters, what the reality is behind oils that clean, and so much more.
In this one here, Lake is talking about motorcycle motor oils and what is different about them, why it matters, and more. It turns out, there is more to oil than just being slick.
Video Description:
Motorcycle Motor Oils: They are more expensive than regular car oils, but are they worth it? Do they really provide additional protection and performance for that additional price? Let’s dig into the technical details regarding clutch performance and deposit control to see if they actually worth it.

Who is the @themotoroilgeek ? I’m a Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Certified Lubrication Specialist and Oil Monitoring Analyst (I’ve maintained both of those for over a decade). I also worked for Joe Gibbs Racing for 12 years as their lubricant specialist. During that time, we worked with Wix Filters (one of our sponsors) to test and develop filters for our race engines. We also worked with Lubrizol and Chevron-Phillips Chemical to test and develop oils for our race cars.
Following that, I was the head of R&D for Driven Racing Oil. During that time, I formulated and tested over 50 products. We also worked with Cummins, Comp Cams, Oak Ridge National Labs and General Motors on various R&D products. Those efforts are recorded in peer reviewed white papers published by SAE International and ACS Sustainable Chemistry journals. I also own and operate SPEEDiagnostix, which provides used oil analysis.
