Shop Tool Tech: How To Wire Up A 220V Outlet For Your Welder!

With the every evolving technology in welding machines, it has never been easier to fabricate parts with just a standard 15 amp 120v outlet, but if you have thicker materials, or wish to do more welding per hour, then a machine capable of 240v input is probably the better way to go. But for years I’ve heard people make their lack of 240v electrical in their garage the reason for not having a welder, which has always made me laugh. If you have a clothes dryer in your garage, or in the laundry room right next to it, you have an outlet you can plug your welder right into already. Or at least a circuit you can add another outlet to. It would be perfectly capable of supporting your welder AND your dryer as long as you are only running one at a time. But what if you are one of the 25% of the country who have a gas dryer instead of an electric one?

In this video here you are going to see how to install your own outlet for your welder. Keep in mind, electricity can be VERY dangerous, so always turn off any power and consult an electrician if you are not capable of handling this kind of job on your own, or if permits are required in your area.
