With the advent of modern LED lights, powerful flashlights have taken off like wildfire. Unfortunately, like most automotive and accessory lighting, there isn’t a standard for measuring and rating flashlights. That means that the sellers can put anything they want on the label, because they aren’t required to measure the power of the lights in any particular way. So while manufacturers might measure all of their own lights the same way, you can’t be sure that anyone else does it the same. It makes it very hard to compare apples to apples, so you basically buy what you like and trust and see what happens. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn’t.
Unfortunately, the number of high dollar flashlights has grown just as quickly as the number of cheap ones. But do you get what you pay for? Do the more expensive lights outperform the cheap offerings?
