We’re not going to lie to you. We’ve become kind of obsessed following the on going battle between driver Jeremy Mayfield and NASCAR over his alleged drug use. There seems to be news breaking every day, so we’re going to start following this thing like beat reporters to keep you up to date with the latest info hitting the wires. Today it involves hair and a mysterious sponsorship Mayfield claims to be working on.
The hair issue is a result of the recent dueling results that came from two urine tests that Mayfield went through. NASCAR has reported that he failed their test, while another test taken just 40 minutes after the NASCAR test came back clean. NASCAR claims that Mayfield diluted his sample prior to taking their test. Hair cannot be tampered with in the ways that urine can be, and the drug would be present in the hair strands if he actually was using it. The only catch is that Mayfield’s hair is a short crew cut and most of the testing requires a piece of about an inch long.

Now, moving onto the sponsorship situation. NASCAR.com is reporting that Mayfield told reporters that he is “80% there” on a sponsorship package that he could shop around to potential teams. The report says that he will not be operating his own team as he has in years past, but would like to bring the money to an existing team and drive for an organization.
The interview is a great read and covers a lot of ground. One thing is for sure, Mayfield has stones. If he’s guilty, this is one of the great last stands of all time. But if he is clean, he stands to humiliate NASCAR on a level that’s probably never been seen before.
