The Red Ball Express: How To Get a Junker Cross-Country For Free In 8 Easy Steps

By now most of you regulars know the wacky story of Freiburger trying to give away his dirt-track racer Javelin and how, on a dime, I became the recipient of this fine piece of machinery. The caveat is that I live in Boston and he lives in Los Angeles.

When trying to figure out how to get the car back East, the idea arose to relay it back with this site’s forum members each grabbing a leg of the trip, thereby foregoing the need to hire a shipping company and allowing a bunch of the Junkyard dwellers a chance at getting in on the action.

Well, here’s the schedule as it stands to transport the car:

Sunday              Feb 1 — Freiburger             — LA to Ely, NV
Monday              Feb 2 – The Silver Buick      — Ely to Denver, CO
Tuesday             Feb 3 – The Silver Buick       — Ely to Denver, CO
Wednesday         Feb 4 — Bamfster                — Denver to KC, KS
Thursday            Feb 5 – 67 RS/SS               — KC to St. Louis, MO
Friday                Feb 6 – 457Brodix              — St. Louis to Indy
Saturday**        Feb 7 – Tiresmoke!             — Indy to Columbus, OH
Saturday**        Feb 8 – Nesabo              — Columbus to Erie, PA
Sunday              Feb 9 –Brian Lohnes            — Erie to Boston, MA

Other forum members have volunteered to ride shotgun with the haulers, Cavemen will be riding with me on the 1,100-mile round-trip cannonball to Erie and back. Ryan Walker will be doing about the same length with Freiburger, and so on.

Once we get the specific route info from the haulers on the list we’ll publish that in an updated blog entry because a lot of people have inquired on how they can at least get to see and sign the car on its trip. We’d love to get as many signatures as humanly possible on this thing to mark the journey’s progress and to get as much participation as possible.

That’s the basic plan as of right now. We’ll be back at you with more details. This is going to be epic!
