What we love about automotive history is that it has so many weird twists and turns, the fun stories are effectively endless. For instance, we had no idea that the Porsche 924 was actually born as a consulting project by the company for VW. When the whole thing was ready for production VW effectively cancelled the project. Knowing they had a good cars on their hands, Porsche bought the idea back and then began to manufacture one of the most well balanced cars in the company’s history.
The OG cars were powered by a four banger engine, used suspension parts from the Beetle, the VW bus, and all kinds of interior VW parts as well. As time went on and the engineers at Porsche refined the design, they were not done with parts bin engineering, working with Mitsubishi of all people on the balance shafts of the engine.
This video talks about the evolution of the car and not just how it was born as a design exercise but how it would go on to evolve and change over the years to become the sought after cars that they are today. The turbochargers, the 944 introduction, and 968 facelift, and the story goes on and on and on.
