Yes, There Was A Drag Strip In Wendover About 5 Miles From The Salt Flats – Video Proof!

Yes, There Was A Drag Strip In Wendover About 5 Miles From The Salt Flats – Video Proof!

Wendover is an interesting place. The little city has existed in various forms for a long time but it saw its greatest population when the United States decided to center many of the operations around the delivery of the first atomic bomb there. There were planes modified there to carry the bombs, pilots trained there to properly execute the missions, and along with all of that came thousands of American service men and women. The Wendover base operated until the middle 1950s before its work was wound down. The barracks where people stayed are still there, one of the runways is still operative for a charter airline known as Swift Air, there is a museum commemorating the area’s history, and there’s now the remains of a dear drag strip among all of that.

Built at the end of a road and using what looks to be pieces of a runway and taxiway from the base, Wendover Drag Strip came to life in the late 1990s and was closed about eight years ago. The Wendover Times newspaper apparently helped to get the place off the ground and as you will see, the place was pretty rustic but it gave local hot rodders a place to have fun without needing to trek the 110 miles to the next nearest track in Salt Lake City. The twin tire walls lining the track, the little building that served as the tower, and the rough as cobb surface are all proof that you don’t need a whole lot to have a great time.

Check out how, umm interesting that these 11-second cars look while running down the track and you’ll quickly realize that the quality of the joint was not exactly national event material. All that being said, we think the little place is neater than hell and wish it were still open to have some rental car fun on!

  1. Singapore Hot Rod

I really liked Wendover. Definition of middle-of-nowhere and that’s what makes it great. I was having a terrible day at work in Lehi, UT so I left and rode to the Salt Flats and just stared into the beauty of it all for about an hour. Then rode to Wendover and had a hamburger. I was better after that. Therapeutic place for a hot rodder.
