Thursday Moment of Photo Zen: 1959 – When Giant Cars Were Truly Giant

Thursday Moment of Photo Zen: 1959 – When Giant Cars Were Truly Giant

I have been spending a ton of time recently leafing through and reading all of the old magazines and newspapers I gathered at my late grandfather’s house. The photo you’ll see below is a perfect example of why. I can’t say for certain where this exact photo came from as it was on a loose magazine page that only gives a page number and date (March 1959) of the original magazine it was from. Obviously my grandfather got a kick out of it when he saw it as well!

As cars expanded at an amazing rate through the late 1960s and into the 1960s, there were infrastructure issues that owners of these huge machines had to deal with. Firstly, they didn’t fit in garages built to hold the Model Ts and old coupes that dominated roads when homes were built.  Secondly, just trying to get the damned thing washed could be a calamity as is seen below by the photo depicting the rear end of a 1958 Cadillac hanging well outside of a modern automatic car wash.

Dig the sign on the wall, too – NOTICE: 1959 Pontiac and other extra wide wheel base cars CANNOT BE WASHED (pending modification)

We’re guessing this lesson was learned the hard way and someone’s 1959 Pontiac got the snot kicked out of it by the car wash machine!
