Video and Tech: We Fix the Brakes and Drive Goliath, Our Project C50 Truck

We recently made some progress wrenching on our big 1964 Chevy C50 that we’ve named Goliath. We repaired the rear brakes and got the truck functional enough to actually attempt driving it on the public streets. We even had the presence of mind to take photos and shoot some guerrilla-style video!

There’s a host of things that we need to be working on to make the C50 truly roadworthy, most importantly, addressing the lack of floors in some sections of the cab. But who doesn’t want to try and drive their project at least once before hacking it up and rendering it unusable for the duration of the repair?

This blog item is a triple hit as we have a tech story about repairing our rear brakes, told through the photos and captions shown here. Following that we have in-truck video of us actually cruising the beast, and then we have a video tour of the truck as it sits today.

We actually needed to fix the brakes first because we’re planning on getting the truck registered soon and we need to drive it to the shop that will be replacing the floors and rocker panels due to the fact that the trailer we towed the truck home on is now on extended loan to someone else. We’re not rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, we’re making headway!

We should note that we have called this truck a ’66, ’65, and now we’re calling it a ’64. There’s reason for that. The seller claimed it was a ’66. When we tore the cab apart we found some signs pointing to the fact that the truck was a ’65. Finally, when we started working on the brakes, we discovered that the truck is actually a ’64 due to the fact that it uses a Bendix Multi-Vac instead of the Hydro-Vac that was brought out in 1965. Long story short, it is old.

Here’s the video of us making a hot lap of our street in the truck. This was the first time we had ever driven it beyond our neighbor’s driveway and the first time that was had driven it using more than first gear. This was a spur of the moment deal, so the production values are not up to our normal outstanding standard.

Here’s a video tour of the truck where you can really see the extent of the floor evaporation!
